Classify an Asset

Classification promotes an unclassified asset into a Device (network infrastructure) or a Client (an endpoint). Once classified, the asset appears in the appropriate section and unlocks more detailed management options.

Device vs. Client

TypeUse forExamples
Device Network infrastructure you manage Switch, router, firewall, access point, UPS, PDU
Client End-user devices connected to the network Workstation, laptop, phone, tablet, printer, IP camera

Before you start

The asset must already exist in NetEdgeIQ (it will have been discovered automatically by the edge agent). Open the asset detail page to see what the system already knows — hostname, IP, vendor, and observed capabilities — to help you decide whether it's a Device or Client.

Steps

  1. Go to Assets in the main navigation and find the asset you want to classify. You can search by hostname, IP address, or MAC address.
  2. Open the asset detail page by clicking the asset row.
  3. Find the Classify button — it appears in the action bar at the top of the asset detail page (or in the actions menu).
  4. Click Classify. A modal dialog opens.
  5. In the classification modal, select the asset type:
    • Device — for managed network infrastructure
    • Client — for end-user endpoints
  6. Click Save to confirm the classification.

What happens next

Example

Scenario The edge agent discovered a new network entity at 10.99.0.32 with hostname DC-LEAF-2 and vendor Arista. The system observed SNMP and SSH capabilities. This is clearly a network switch — classify it as a Device.
Another scenario An asset was discovered at 10.10.10.55 with a MAC address resolving to a Dell workstation vendor. No SNMP capability observed. This is an endpoint — classify it as a Client.
Admin note Admins can classify assets across all organizations. The classification modal is identical — just confirm you are on the correct asset before saving.
